What big fad helped launch HDPE production?

HDPE plastic is the stuff of hula hoops. When the hula hoop fad hit the nation (and then the world) in the late 1950s, hundreds of millions of the things were produced, using enough high-density polyethylene -- HDPE -- to make at least five Earth-sized hula hoops.
