Is a "fossil fuel furnace" what I think it is?

Probably! A fossil fuel furnace is term used by home-heating specialists to refer to any heating equipment that uses oil, gas or other fossil fuels as a primary energy source. It's generally used in contrast to a heat pump, which does not directly use fossil fuel.
